In the Year 1887, William Hearst took over "Francisco Examiner" which have a very less circulation. Soon, Hearst made lots of changes and made "San Francisco Examiner" Newspaper No.1 and successful. Hearst entered New York Newspaper industry to compete with the No.1 "NewYork World" Newspaper run by Joseph Pultizer .
First, William Hearst uses his money power to buy City Editor, Business manager, Sunday Editor, etc from his rival Pulitzer's "New York World" Newspaper. Secondly, William Hearst uses the same number of pages as that of Pultizer's "New York World" Newspaper. Thirdly, William Hearst uses sensational news about the scandals, scams and crime. Moreover, he priced half the prize of the Pultizer's "New York World" Newspaper.
William Hearts was waiting for one sensational news to increase his circulation. on Feb 15 1898, a sudden explosion submerged the American ship that contains 266 American sailors. Without having any proof for the incident, Hearst headlined his "New York Journal" as "Work of an Enemy" and complained Spain.
Pulitzer was honest in reporting correct and Authentic information in his "NewYork World" Newspaper which people liked and respected a lot. Joseph Pulitzer was successful in running his Newspaper using sensational news.He felt that the competition with Hearst that have made him to move out of Authenticity and originality. So, he regrets his mistake and donated two million dollars to Columbia university, which started the school of journalism.
Today, he is best known for the Pulitzer Prizes, which were established in 1917 to recognize artistic and journalistic achievements in the United States.
